The assumption that groups such as different "races" and sexes have transhistorical, immutable, invariable properties which are fixed in nature (see "Race"). Anti essentialism is a position that rejects this philosophy of pre-existent human essences, and instead asserts a constructionist notion of social, psychical and historical "difference" in understanding the human subject.
